Overview

Client: Large technical engineering services provider with long-term fixed-price contracts recognizing revenue via the percentage-of-completion (POC) method. The cornerstone input-Estimate-to-Complete (ETC) varied widely in quality and process across programs.

Situation

Programs used inconsistent methods and tools to calculate ETC. Manual processes led to delays and inaccuracies, making it difficult to evaluate performance against budgets and determine the correct monthly revenue/profit recognition.

Objectives
  • Standardize ETC calculation across all programs and hierarchy levels.
  • Reduce manual effort and error risk; enable quick quality checks.
  • Support POC revenue recognition with timely, accurate inputs.
Approach
  • Data Access: SQL + ODBC connections to Deltek Costpoint to pull actuals by project/WBS level.
  • Excel UX (VBA): One-click selection of any project/hierarchy; renders a monthly trend matrix by major Revenue and Cost elements.
  • Drill-Through: Double-click any cell to auto-generate a Pivot Table with transaction-level detail for that number.
  • Budget Option: Incorporate calendarized budget for the selected level to support forecast validation and variance analysis.
